5. Have you prepared a “Ready to Go Kit” with emergency supplies that you keep at home, in your car or where you work to take with you if you had to leave quickly? Yes No

Prepare a “Ready to Go Kit”

Emergencies can strike at any time. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a “Ready to Go Kit” kit to keep in your car or office.  It contains supplies that you can take with you in a bag or backpack.

Your “Ready to Go Kit” kit should include some food and water to get you from emergency to safety and some of the comforts from home, like a toothbrush. Customize your “Ready to Go Kit” kit based on your own personal needs, but every good “Ready to Go Kit” kit should include:

  • Battery powered flashlight
  • Battery powered radio
  • Blanket
  • Work gloves
  • Plastic work goggles
  • Dust mask
  • Rain poncho
  • Whistle
  • First aid kit

6. Have you made a specific plan for how you and your family would communicate in an emergency situation if you were separated? Yes No

For more information about making a plan go to http://www.newcanaanready.org/planning.htm.

7. Have you established a specific meeting place to reunite in the event you and your family cannot return home or are evacuated? Yes No

Having a predetermined meeting place away from your home will save time and minimize confusion if your home is affected or the area is evacuated. You may want to make arrangements to stay with a family member or friend in case of an emergency. Be sure to include any pets in these plans since pets are not permitted in shelters and some hotels will not accept them. Create a plan for family members or neighbors who need special assistance evacuating.

New Canaan High School is designated as a pet shelter during an emergency.

Check on your loved ones and friends in the event of a disaster. Register yourself at Safe and Well.
The American Red Cross Safe and Well Website, is an internet-based tool that families can integrate into their family communications plan and also one that the Red Cross will use to help disaster victims communicate from inside the disaster-affected areas to loved ones outside.

People within a disaster area can register themselves as "safe and well" by selecting and posting standard messages for friends and family that indicate they are safe and well at a shelter, home or hotel, and will make contact when they are able. Concerned family members who know the person's phone number (home, cell or work) or a complete home address can search for the messages posted by those who self-register.

The Safe and Well Website complies with all privacy and child protection laws. Because of these privacy concerns, no location information is publicly displayed on this website. The results of a successful search only display a loved one's first name, last name, an as of date, and the Safe and Well messages they posted.

8. Have you practiced or drilled on what to do in an emergency at home? Yes No

Practice makes perfect. Practicing or performing emergency drills is very important. Most schools require all students to participate in fire drills... every family should have emergency drills as well. Look for ways to make emergency drills an enjoyable family activity and avoid scaring your children or making them worry unnecessarily. For information on how to prepare children for emergencies click here.

9. Have you registered with the New Canaan emergency outcall system? Yes No

This is an emergency call out system which will allow authorized New Canaan civic leaders to create and rapidly disseminate time-sensitive messages to every telephone number stored in the notification database. With this service, authorized users can send thousands of messages in minutes to New Canaan residents and businesses. Only authorized officials are allowed access to the system.
