Have a family meeting and make a specialized readiness plan for your family:
- Jobs - Establish responsibilities for each family member.
- Meeting Places - Choose two places to meet after a disaster: at home in case of a sudden emergency (such as a fire) and outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home (such as a flood).
- Utilities - Each adult should learn how to turn off utilities such as water, electricity and gas.
- Ready to Go Kit - Everyone should know where the “Ready to Go Kit” is kept.
- Emergency Contact Information - Make copies of emergency contact information on a card (PDF) for all members to carry with them. You should also record this information on your cell phone.
- Special Assistance - Create a plan for family members or neighbors who need special assistance evacuating. Please click here for more information.
- Pet Care - Create a plan for care of your pets. Take your animal with you in the event of evacuation. Be aware that not all shelters take pets. In New Canaan, there is a plan for a pet shelter at New Canaan High School. Click here to see the Town of New Canaan Pets page.
- Safe and Well - Check on your loved ones and friends in the event of a disaster. Register yourself as Safe and Well. Utilize the American Red Cross Safe and Well website during a disaster by going to www.safeandwell.org.
- Children and Educators - For materials to use at home and for school including coloring books, activity sheets and lesson plans click here or visit www.fema.gov/kids.
