Harper Family Disaster Preparation
Note: Rather than try to anticipate every possible disaster, we have focused on things more likely to happen (power outage, accident, fire) where we believe planning and preparation will make a difference and provided the check list below to remind us what to keep on hand/take with us as required.
Separation when a disaster occurs
- Disaster at home, e.g. a fire…meet at Jane’s (neighbor) garage or if we must leave the neighborhood, meet at Stamford Landing
- Disaster out of the household
- Text each other: status (OK or not), location and if you need help
- E-mail xxx@gmail.com to give your whereabouts, check on other family members and decide if and where to rendezvous.
Medical Emergency at home
- All adults have CPR, abdominal thrusts and First Aid training
- If serious, call 911 then provide assistance
- Small first aid kit in upstairs hall closet
- Big first aid kit in garage
- SAFETY PRACTICE: Cell phone in pocket when on ladders etc.
Fire at home
- First call 911 and alert others to get out
- Fire extinguishers in broom closet (kitchen) and upstairs hall closet
- Escape routes in a fire:
- Upstairs test door for heat; if cool check hallway for smoke; if clear, down the stairs and out the door
- If door is hot and/or hall is smoky
- Anne’s room exit side window over garage to the back
- Rodgers’ room exit back window to porch roof and down
- Martha’s room exit through Anne’s window
- Downstairs, use whichever of 3 doors is clear
- Make sure garage is open to let Lucy out
